Cross-Country Road Trip: An Introduction

cross-country road trip from pittsburgh to spokane
Our cross-country road trip spanned from Pittsburgh to Spokane.

The road stretches long before us, winding eternal in some places and stalwartly straight in others. Though I am not behind the wheel, the passenger seat in which I ride is accommodating and commands an air of importance. It is up to me to keep Drew cognizant, to prevent him from falling bereft of consciousness and tumbling us into an awaiting abyss. Though I must perform my own occupational tasks, this is a responsibility I do not take lightly.

I have lost track of which day it is, of which day it will be. For now, the only thing I am aware of is the road, stretching before us like an unending passage into the earth, dividing otherwise unbroken land into sharp, jarring segments. I know where we are going and where we have been, but I do not know what is in-between, where the journey will lead us.

Words and music fill the auditory void before us, giving us hope as the minutes pass to hours. Another song plays, another chapter ends. Still the road signs roll past, still the snow swizzles and swirls around our tires, still the van jostles at the demanding touch of the roadway. When will we arrive? When did we leave? Is there an end, or is this cross-country road trip simply the start of something much more to come?
