Tennessee is a state of diversity and inclusion, with a variety of races, religions, and cultures represented in its borders. It is also widely known for its cuisine and the important role it plays in the music industry. Here are a few key points of Tennessee culture you need to know before heading to the Volunteer State.

If there’s one thing we know about the south, it’s that the food here is phenomenal. Some of the best southern classics can be found in Tennessee, such as barbeque, cornbread, and fried chicken. You can find many food festivals in this state, where you can sample some of the best soul food and other southern staples, such as the Memphis Food and Wine Festival in the fall.

Alcohol

Another thing Tennessee is known for is alcohol, and while there are plenty of amazing microbreweries, distilleries, and wineries in the state, it is most famous for being the home of the Jack Daniel’s Distillery. Jack Daniel’s is the top-selling whiskey in the world, and while some may argue that it should be classified as a “bourbon,” no one will argue that it is one of the most iconic pieces of Tennessee culture. Whiskey is important to the history of this state, and it is well-known for this fact – just ask Chris Stapleton

Music

Tennessee holds the key to the American music scene, particularly in three cities – Nashville, Memphis, and Bristol. From country to blues, from bluegrass to rock and roll, they have birthed some of the best music in the industry, and while it may be known as the “birthplace of country music,” a lot of the music genres we know today have roots here. Home to Aretha Franklin, Dolly Parton, Justin Timberlake, and Tina Turner, Tennessee has created some of the best-known musicians to this day, which is why we associate a strong presence in the industry with this state.

Nature

The residents of Tennessee take pride in their music, their whiskey, and their cuisine. But, more than that, they know it’s home to some of the most beautiful natural attractions in the country. The Lost Sea, located in Sweetwater, holds the largest underwater lake in the United States, which is a definite must-see if you’re in the area. There are also a series of stunning waterfalls you can enjoy when you’re in Tennessee, such as Virgin Falls. There is so much nature here to enjoy and a vital part of getting the true Tennessee experience is to explore these hidden gems.

Art is also important to the state of Tennessee, and you can find a series of incredible museums and galleries across the state. The Knoxville Museum of Art is a great place to start if you’re looking for a look into the art of this state. They also take their performing arts very seriously, and if you’re looking to see a live performance, Knoxville is also a great place to start. You can catch a variety of famous Broadway shows at the Tennessee Theater, which opened in 1928. Nashville, while known mostly for its role in the music industry, is also a great place to break into the acting scene. If you’re a Nashville actress or actor looking to make it big in the industry, you’re in the right place for opportunity.
