NaNoWriMo 2015: It Begins
NaNoWriMo 2015 has begun! If you’re not sure what NaNoWriMo is, basically the goal is to write a novel (50,000 words) in the period of one month. It is a tough challenge, especially if you actually try to write something worthwhile. I’ve done it in past years but have only been a “winner” twice. This year, I plan to win once more!
November 1 rolled around this past weekend, even gifting us with an extra hour of writing thanks to DST. I didn’t start writing at the stroke of midnight like many other dedicated writers, but I did get started later in the day. I wrote about half of my goal word count before hockey, and then finished it up when I got back at 1 AM (late night writing is always an adventure).
Are you curious what I’m writing about? So was I, at first, since I didn’t really have any plot ideas. But thanks to an interesting dream I had involving some kind of weird travel to a parallel dimension, I was able to devise an intriguing plot that should give me plenty to work with. Basically, this woman will be controlled by a demon and forced to commit terrible crimes so he can gain more power. Right now, the working title is “Cursed Blood,” but that’s something I just made up so I could create my novel on the Nano site. I’ll brainstorm it some more once it is more developed.
Anyway, I’m going to try and record my journey by posting a daily (ok, maybe not daily) excerpt from what I’m writing. Today’s sample is actually the first thing I wrote – the dreaded opening lines.
My NaNoWriMo 2015 Excerpt:
The depression overtook me like a fatal dose of anesthesia. I was happy, once. I can barely remember those benevolent moments now. But as time passed, I felt the tendrils of malevolence inside of me. It was far off, so distant I didn’t even believe it could be real, until the day it completely and utterly smothered me without so much as a warning. I slipped into that coma of languor and lethargy with all of my being, as though I had fallen through a crack on an ice-covered lake. Under the icy water, sealed and shuttered away, unable to find an escape. Drowning with the cold tingling my tongue, a frozen kiss, slowly and languidly and purposely. It was my destiny, I suppose.
We all have certain things we are meant to accomplish in this tortured life. Some are meant to fix the earth’s problems, bring people together in peace, make the world a better place. Then there are the others. The souls that work to undo this delicate and serene work. I had never intended to be one of these people, but it seems you can’t escape the cruel legerdemain of the universe. Once it’s determined a plan for you, there’s no going back.
